The Reason why you should avoid focusing and reframing is...
Greetings! I present Tomas López-Fragoso who will explain in
this article the alternatives to focus and re framing when shooting with our
camera. Enjoy it!
A photograph can admit several failures, without affecting
much to its final result: exposure, some composition...
But if the focus (or point of focus) is not where it should
be, that photograph is not worth it, it's that simple.
Also an out of focus photo, for now it cannot be solved
adequately by software.
The types of focus in our camera
The current cameras allow us several modes of auto focus,
either the static type, where we focus a point by slightly pressing the trigger
and the focus is locked to take the picture, or the dynamic focus, for moving
objects.
Regardless of the type of auto-focus that we use, reflex and
advanced cameras have several modes of selection of the area or area of
autofocus:
Automatic AF area: The camera automatically detects the
subject and selects the focus point.
Dynamic zone AF: the user manually selects the focus point,
but the camera focuses based on the information obtained from the surrounding
focus points if the subject briefly leaves the selected point.
Single point AF: The user selects the focus point and the
camera focuses only on the subject of the selected focus point. Useful with
static subjects.
This last point is the one that most people use, in almost
all of their photos, but many do it in the wrong way: using only the central
focus point, focusing on where they want the focus to be and then re frame.
Focus 1
This is a very common mistake. Let's look at the limitations
of this method and why we should avoid it on many occasions.
Sharpness: Technique and Method
Avoid focusing and reframing
As I mentioned, many people only use the central focus
point, focus and then reframe.
This cause in many cases an error and lack of focus at the
desired point.
This is so because when we focus a point, a focus plane is
created parallel to the camera, which contains that point.
Focus 2
Once we have focused, and when composing, moving the camera,
that plane moves us, staying parallel to the camera at all times.
focus 3
In the previous case, we see as if the depth of field is
very small, when focusing and then recomposing, we have lost the focus that we
had placed on the subject's face and it has become a little behind, so the
photo, with a defocused face, it would be discarded.
If we had a large depth of field:
Focus 4
When recomposing, we would have the desired point focused,
but as I say, only if we have a sufficient depth of field.
Approach 5 to avoid losing focus on our photos, do not focus
and then reframe, but use the focus points. Let's see how to use them:
Let's use the focus points
The SLR cameras and advanced, offer different points of
focus, for us to use when taking our pictures.
The most advanced models have many of these points, which
greatly facilitate the work of selecting one that is close to the reason we
want to focus.
Focus 6
The initial models usually offer a smaller number of focus
points, between 9 and 11 normally, but are usually intelligently distributed by
the sensor, covering the most interesting points at the composition level of a
photograph.
Focus 7
When taking a photograph, instead of focusing and re frame,
we must choose the point of focus we want, the one that matches where we want
the focus or the closest, using the camera controls. In this way, we will not
avoid any focus problem, or remove the subject from the depth of field area.
Focus 8
So remember to avoid as far as possible to focus and
reframe, and more if you use a large aperture, a telephoto lens or you are very
close to the subject, as all this greatly reduces the depth of field.
Use and familiarize yourself with the use of focus points
and do not lose any more photos for not having the focus on the site you
wanted.
